Meet the Makers of F Christmas
Meet the Makers of F Christmas
This holiday season, we're getting silly, serious and sustainable with Fat Fruit.
With opening night of the most eagerly awaited Christmas show in town approaching, we spoke to the acclaimed artists behind the wild and wonderful production, Bec Matthews and Sarah Ward of Fat Fruit.
How did the show start?
We first approached director Susie Dee about the idea. Susie loved it, the ideas started to flow and they did not stop coming, each of them equally hilarious, disturbing, dark and wondrous. All we needed was a partner brave enough to see our vision and understand its relevance.
What compelled you to make this show?
We wanted to create a Christmas variety show that replicates the push-pull of Christmas: over-consumption, joy, excess, sharing, greed, bringing people together, pulling them apart… Christmas is a conundrum. Even from within our F Christmas family we have vastly different experiences of Christmas. But regardless of how we all feel, it’s obvious that something has to change. Do we continue with excess or do we find a way to celebrate without melting all of the ice at the North Pole?
Why does this story matter now?
Us queers are used to having to hold more than one idea in our heads, that’s why the paradox of Christmas is familiar to us. This show creates a safe space for queer, non-binary and trans audiences to celebrate Christmas and the ‘silly season’ while also enjoying the uncomfortable and dark spaces we all inhabit.
People need a laugh too, and this show will be absolutely hilarious!
