Scarlett O’Hara hates politics. She likes parties, cakes and green dresses that show off her 13-inch waist. But here in the halls of the filthy rich, politics is all the boys ever talk about. When a surprise election is called and the men rush off to fight the ‘good fight’, Scarlett’s comfortable world of instant gratification turns upside down.
Australia’s “smartest theatrical satirists” (Limelight) return to Malthouse with an urgent response to the polarisation of Australian society. With marginal seats turning orange faster than you can say “please explain”, Bloomshed mines the past to reckon with a future where political paradigms are teetering on the edge of collapse.
Wrapped in the warm cloak of a whirlwind romance, this unflinching adaptation holds a mirror to the Australian mythos, where an almost cult-like devotion to tonka trucks, exploiting finite natural resources and ‘stopping the boats’ erupts into a catastrophe that tears traditional politics apart.
Where will Scarlett go? What will she do? Perhaps nostalgia for a world that never existed is the answer…
