Join Director Dean Bryant and Designer Dann Barber as they lift the curtain to reveal their process of transforming an iconic Hollywood film to The Merlyn stage. The task of reimagining a classic is a challenging one, and to apply a concept where one-actor plays both iconic leads is even harder. In this workshop, Dean and Dann will take you step-by-step through their process of leaning into theatrical tropes and subverting the expectations of a well-known source material.
Dean has an extensive history of pulling off large theatrical feats. In this workshop he will share how collaborating with Christie Whelan Browne on multiple occasions has informed his approach to the work, and how you sculpt a show utilising the skills of an ensemble cast. Dann has designed multiple shows for The Merlyn – Meow Meow’s The Red Shoes, Troy, Macbeth (An Undoing). He will reveal insights into how he approaches the large venue, what the quirks of the space are and how he has worked with different creative teams to elevate the intention and presentation of works.
This workshop is suitable for anyone creating theatre and the theatre curious.
