MALTHOUSE THEATRE

Presents

VISTA

A STEPHANIE LAKE COMPANY PRODUCTION

One show, two worlds.

WELCOME

Welcome to VISTA at Malthouse.

I first had the pleasure of working with Stephanie Lake when I was Executive Producer at Chunky Move and Steph was a sublime dancer for the company. This was almost a quarter of a century ago, and she was already interested in creating her own work. Since then, it has been awe-inspiring to watch her build one of the truly great choreographic careers Australia has seen. This year alone, her work has travelled to London, with Colossus being seen at the Southbank Centre, and Manifesto touring to the US and Canada (and France later this year). Along with running her own company, Steph is currently Resident Choreographer at The Australian Ballet.

Dance has always been part of Malthouse’s programming. The Merlyn is particularly well-suited to the form – there’s something about the height and width that allows an audience to really experience what these incredible artists can do with their bodies, while maintaining an intimacy with them. Steph’s work has appeared in the space numerous times. Her triumph Manifesto played here as part of RISING in 2022 as did her co-creation Monsters later that same year.

Her new work, VISTA, came about as she wanted to get back to her origins, and build something precise and focused on a smaller group of dancers. It also marks her first collaboration with another Melbourne icon, ALPHA60, who are on board as costume designers. It’s a thrill to welcome Steph back to Malthouse and to premiere her new work, before it too begins a national tour.

STEPHANIE LAKE COMPANY

Stephanie Lake Company is a multi-award winning contemporary dance company based in Melbourne (Naarm), Australia that tours the world. Lauded for major shows such as Manifesto, Colossus and The Chronicles, Stephanie Lake Company creates powerful dance works that are emotionally charged and intelligently crafted. The shows are renowned for their humanity, humour and electrifying physicality.

Working in collaboration with Australia’s leading dancers and designers, the company has performed in major festivals and venues across Australia and the world, touring internationally to France, Germany, Hong Kong, Denmark, Spain, Canada, Singapore, Scotland, Ireland, Argentina, Taiwan and more. Alongside mainstage works, the company also creates mass participation performances that have involved over 2500 community dancers to date.

Stephanie Lake Company collaborates across theatre, film, music video, opera and visual art and supports the next generation of artists through choreographic commissions, workshops, internships and mentoring.

CREATOR'S NOTE

STEPHANIE LAKE

Embarking on a new show is thrilling, but it can also be overwhelming – the creative possibilities are just so vast. That’s why I like fences and structures. When thinking about VISTA, I set myself a structural boundary at the outset. There’s a common convention in contemporary dance that shows last about 60 minutes with no interval. With my feet in the ballet world more often recently, and getting to experience so many shows divided by an interval, I decided to use that formal device not only as the starting point but the central concept. Not a double bill, not a full-length piece split by an interval, but a show in which the intermission is actually the prime mover.

Act One and Act Two are in complete correspondence with each other. The aim has been to create a show that the audience sees in Act One and then, after the palate cleanser of an interval, they return to see the same show again, but viewed as if they are wearing wildly different glasses. They have new eyes. What a fun puzzle!

None of us sees the world in the same way. Every experience is subjective. What is fact and what is belief? In two versions of the same story, does the truth lie in between? These questions felt like rich territory in a world of algorithmic polarisation and a crisis of understanding. VISTA is my attempt to wrestle with those questions and dance our way through.

Setting sail on this creative journey has been wonderful, surprising and enlivening. As always, I’m full of curiosity as we careen towards ‘meeting’ the show when it lands in front of an audience next week. The six dancers (Marni Green, Robert Tinning, Georgia Van Gils, Tyrel Dulvarie, Rachel Coulson and Hugo Poulet) and team of collaborators (Robin Fox, Georgie Cleary of Alpha60, Bosco Shaw and Rachel Lee) are all phenomenal – there’s no show without them. The alchemic chemistry when creating a new show is everything, and I’m indebted to each and every one of them. I also have the benefit of the most extraordinary team behind-the-scenes, led by SLC’s Executive Producer Beth Raywood Cross.

Big thanks to Vivia Hickman, Dean Bryant and all at Malthouse Theatre, as well as Carriageworks and Brisbane Powerhouse for getting behind this work with total enthusiasm, sight unseen. To The Australian Ballet for generous studio residencies across the creation of VISTA, and to Samantha Hines and Darci O’Rourke for their creative contributions to early developments. Huge thanks to our Commissioning Circle of donors, to the Sidney Myer Foundation, Canny Quine Foundation, Humanity Foundation and our major funders Creative Australia and Creative Victoria – our work would not be possible without your support.
