THE SUITCASE SERIES EMPOWERS YOUNG PEOPLE TO TACKLE THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OF THEIR GENERATION: CLIMATE CHANGE.

The Suitcase Series is Malthouse Theatre’s award-winning participatory program for Year 9 and 10 students. Combining in-class activity with in-theatre and/or online performance, this innovative program is an opportunity for students to develop and expand their theatre-making skills and share work with peers.

In the face of the climate crisis it is more crucial than ever to determine where we are headed by assessing where we have come from…  and what we have created along the way: the useful and destructive; the ugly and the beautiful.

Every two years, we create a new script exclusively for the program. Drawing on Surrealism, Magic Realism and AfroFuturism, our newest commission Who No Kno Go Kno by Kuda Mapeza utilises physical theatre, song, puppetry, mask and percussion; a cross-disciplinary melding of Western and non-Western dramaturgy.

The heat of the sun has grown too heavy. Night movement only. Fire in the sky might melt the skin off your bones. Banished to a bunker on the side of a rock face, the lives of Mother Nature’s children can only be filled with the mythology of a world gone by. In a desperate effort to challenge the tall and terrifying stories they’ve been told, one of them breaks out—at sunrise…

Participating schools receive the Who No Kno Go No script, teachers’ notes and class plans, ongoing support, and access to the private Suitcase Series online portal – a place to delve further into the script and themes, to find out technical information for your performance day, and to share your work.

Schools attending the in-theatre days will come together to perform their devised work, share feedback, and then enjoy our live Malthouse production of Who No Kno Go No . Schools participating digitally will be able to upload their piece directly to the portal, access and give feedback on all other schools’ works, and watch a professional recording of Who No Kno Go No .
