Malthouse Theatre is delighted to introduce Kit Lazaroo and Louris van de Geer as the latest participants in the Malcolm Robertson Writers Program. Congratulations Kit and Louris! The Malcolm Robertson Foundation supports the development and presentation of original Australian works by way of a Writers Program. Since 2004, the program has commissioned two emerging artists per year to write a new Australian work for Malthouse Theatre.

Kit Lazaroo
Kit is writing Body of a Girl, a surreal reimagining of the crime drama genre, infusing the logic of the procedural genre with deeper questions about environmental degradation, authority, subjectivity, and shifting systems of knowledge. Full of imagination and humour, it also draws inspiration from Rachel Carson’s landmark work of investigative environmental science, Silent Spring. Kit's theatre credits include the following Here Theatre productions: True Adventures of a Soul Lost at Sea (produced 2004—a recipient of a RE Ross Award and nominated for Green Room Award for writing), Asylum (produced in 2007 and 2007, winner of a Wal Cherry Play of the Year Award, nominated for two Premer's Literary Awards and published by Currency Press), Letters from Animals (shortlisted for a Max Afford Award and produced 2007 to critical aclaim), Topsy (produced 2010 and a recipient of an RE Ross Award) and Bright Shiny/Green Night (at Carlton Courthouse in 2014). Kit collaborated on the Burnt Book project with Nancy Black and Jane Woollard for Clune's Book Town Fringe Festival in May 2014. Her short work in progress Do you hear it sing? was read as part of the Performance Studies international Conference in Melbourne in 2016, and in 2017 she was a participant in the Besen Family Writer's Program at the Malthouse Theatre.

Louris van de Geer
Through her unique visual dramaturgy and sparse poetic dialogue, Louris van de Geer is adapting Elizabeth Harrower's 1966 novel The Watch Tower to the stage. Originally set in Sydney during the Second World War, Louris' approach distils the subterranean power play of this psychological drama about two sisters —Clare and Laura—who find themselves both trapped by financial bondage and an oppressive marriage. Laura's husband Felix is one of Australian literature's most malicious villains, and this adaptation explores the struggle to retain a self amid both domestic and global conflict. Louris van de Geer is a playwright and theatre maker from Melbourne, Australia. She has been described as 'a distinctive new voice' by The Age, and her work as a 'brilliant...study of human existence'. Her writing experiments with contemporary theatrical form and explores the impossible, the grim and the absurd. Louris holds a Masters of Writing for Performance from the Victorian College of the Arts, and has interned with writer and director Richard Maxwell from New York City Players, Marius von Mayenburg at the Schaubühne Berlin and Ivo van Hove from Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Recent projects include Looking Glass (fortyfivedownstairs 2017), The Son (MTC Cybec 2016), Triumph (fortyfivedownstairs 2016) and Hello There, We've Been Waiting For You (Next Wave & ACMI 2014).
