SERIES ONE 2008
MERLYN THEATRE
About THINGS ON SUNDAY
THINGS ON SUNDAY is a series that speaks to and about a range of
cultural
concerns in Australian society today. Its style is intimate, with
a touch of the
theatrical. Its philosophy is art matters.
The series comprises monthly events that bring together commentary
and
conversation in an always entertaining combination. These events
include
audio-visual concerts, speeches and readings, artistic memoirs and
the
occasional debate. The subject matter of each event is chosen for
its lateral
connection to an existing production.
#2 Fatal Attraction, Dangerous
Liaisons
20 APRIL, 2:30pm
Is that a gun in your pocket or
are you just
happy to see me?
Marilyn Monroe had it. Mae West had it. Louise Brooks had it. The explosive device, the bomb in bombshell, the fabulous frightening it factor. With
eyes to drown in, a voice so low a lover could fall into it, and
the poisonous promise of an eternal tomorrow, these screen divas
have clasped us in their soft white arms and left us hanging out
to die.
One of Australias most loved film critics Margaret Pomeranz (The Movie Show, At the Movies) and special guest Sigrid Thornton (The Blue Room) take a look at the femme fatale, as viewed through the lens of Hollywood.
Join them as they show us their favourite screen sirens, and debate
the case over who is wearing the highest killer stiletto.
Ana Kokkinos is proud to accept an invitation to the 2020 Summit and will no longer be participating in this event.

#3 Pictures of Innocence?
25 MAY, 2:30pm
Child of the pure unclouded brow
/and
dreaming eyes of wonder!
Childhood is a recent invention. Its only in the last 200
years that the child has been conceived as a separate being to the
adult and even this idea has had many guises. One abiding principle
has been the idea of innocence and the exclusion of all things sexual.
But are our little tykes more knowing than we care to see?
Artist and curator Linda Sproul takes us on an visual excursion
through Victorian ideas about children, as revealed through the
photographs of Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson), Julia Margaret Cameron
and other eminent photographers of the day, and through our own
sensibility about the proper place of children in the world. The
differences between the Victorian age and the present day loom large
- and so do the blind spots. Its a carousel ride we guarantee
youll remember.
