About THINGS ON SUNDAY
THINGS ON SUNDAY is a series that speaks to and about a range of
cultural
concerns in Australian society today. Its style is intimate, with
a touch of the
theatrical. Its philosophy is art matters.
The series comprises monthly events that bring together commentary
and
conversation in an always entertaining combination. These events
include
audio-visual concerts, speeches and readings, artistic memoirs and
the
occasional debate. The subject matter of each event is chosen for
its lateral
connection to an existing production.

The soundtrack of our lives
Popular music: it beats us around, it heats us up, it takes
us into the zone, somewhere better, another place, or back in time.
It’s personal pain, it’s the world around us; it’s a time and a
place and a mood. And we hear it and we know it and we play it back
in our heads again and again.
With the fervour of a preacher and the passion of an Elvis fan,
our guests - Rockwiz host and music aficionado Julia Zemiro,
addicted-to-bass DJ Josh Abrahams, and a man with a musical pedigree
as stylish as his wardrobe, Dave Graney—discuss the ways in which
popular music defines us, agreeing to agree or disagree depending
on the song.

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow
Imagine the world fifty years from now. Is it a chain of cities
made up of ersatz mansions, astro-turf lawns and simulated sex?
A place where the desert does indeed meet the sea? Or is it just
another year, another day, but this time round with homemade apple
pie as a red-hot commodity?
Playwright Hannie Rayson, curator and Next Wave Artistic Director
Jeff Khan, and David Woods, of Exit the King and the comic
team Ridiculusmus, dream, speculate and satirise as they give us
a brave new view of 2057. Hosted by the redoubtable Michael Cathcart,
cultural historian and broadcaster.

He ain’t heavy
The performance work Kin is a remarkable and heart-rending
journey of boys becoming men. Here we go behind the scenes, and
witness how the work was made by Stephen Page (Bangarra Dance Company)
and his young collaborators in a documentary screening followed
by a conversation between Stephen and Malthouse Theatre’s Artistic
Director Michael Kantor.

Five minutes to midnight
What are we to do? The polar caps are melting and Australia’s
riverways are drying up. Scientists argue the size of the hole in
the ozone or the scale of global warning. Stage 3 water restrictions
become Stage 4 and look like becoming a way of life. And what’s
the place of art in this, if any?
With ABC science buff Robyn Williams asking the questions, Cate
Blanchett and Andrew Upton, incoming co-artistic directors of Sydney
Theatre Company and Michael Kantor, artistic director of Malthouse
Theatre, green up their credentials and their companies as they
walk us through a plan of action for the performing arts. Dr Grant
Blashki (Doctors for the Environment Australia and Al Gore’s nominated
local presenter on climate change) plays devil’s advocate as he
illustrates how the world is spinning on its own future.
