SERIES TWO 2008
THINGS ON SUNDAY (and a bit on Monday)
#1 SCENES FROM EVERYDAY LIFE
13 JULY, 2:30PM
In a career spanning continents as well as decades, playwright Daniel Keene has mined the epic qualities of everyday life. Here Daniel’s finely wrought observations are coupled with his inner clown in a new short work. Three Men in a Bottle is a play
about missed opportunities, reckless rumours and late-night card games. This rehearsed reading is given sparkling life by some of Australia’s favourite
stage performers, including Kym Gyngill, Julie Forsyth, Monica Maughan, Chloe Armstrong and Mark Constable, under the direction of Kate Davis (The Rabble). This is an afternoon where the bottle is definitely half-full and more!
#2 THE REX CRAMPHORN MEMORIAL LECTURE
NIGEL JAMIESON
MONDAY 22 SEPTEMBER, 6:30PM
Nigel Jamieson is that rare creature in Australian theatre, an artist whose vision boldly takes no prisoners. His work includes multi-award winning productions The Theft of Sita, All of Me, Wake Baby, Homelands and Honour Bound. Large-scale projects have included Tin Symphony for the 2000 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony and Artistic Direction of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games
Closing Ceremony.
In 2007 Nigel received the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award, with the jury describing his work as “outstanding theatrical productions which are both true works of art and clarion calls against brutal politics and social apathy.” Who better than Nigel Jamieson to present this year’s Rex Cramphorn Memorial Lecture, an annual
forum for big ideas about theatre’s place in the world in the spirit of the late Rex Cramphorn*.
*Previous speakers include Nick Enright, John Romeril, Barrie Kosky, Lindy Davies, Rhoda Roberts, Jim Sharman, Wesley Enoch, Daniel Keene, Lyndon Terracini, Neil Armfield and Geoffrey Rush.
#3 WOMEN OF POWER
16 NOV, 2:30PM
Metereologists predict weather patterns, economists survey financial markets, banks
measure interest rates, and so on it goes. But who charts the public imagination? And what are the factors, and the people, that shape it? With a woman finally in the top public office in the land, we thought it timely to invite two of our most prominent women in the arts - Melbourne University Press publisher, Louise Adler and actor,
director and former CEO of STC, Robyn Nevin - into the chair to discuss how the imagination and real politic must dance together and what it means to be the CEO of a creative enterprise.
