As we find ourselves at the peak of the winter months we look beyond
the
shorter and colder days to Spring. Were strapping ourselves
in and abseiling
into an action-packed festival season where The CUB Malthouse becomes
a hive for Melbournes contemporary theatre scene.
We have had a bumper year thus far, with sell-out performances of
The Importance of Being Earnest and The Session, while
Stephen Sewells
acclaimed play, It Just Stopped, directed by Neil Armfield,
is enjoying a Sydney
season and Kage Physical Theatre get ready to take Headlock
to the world.
Marius von Mayenburg visited from Germany to enjoy the English language
premiere of Eldorado, directed by Benedict Andrews while
Caroline Lee and
Laurence Strangio brought Marguerite Duras enduring novella
to the
stage of the Beckett Theatre with La Douleur.
This season, we are excited to present a compelling new work that
we have
co-commissioned with the Sydney Opera House: Honour Bound.
A fusion of
aerial performances and multimedia, Honour Bound explores
the case of
Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks through the eyes of his parents,
Terry and Bev Hicks.
Spring is once again the season of annual arts festivals. Malthouse
Theatre
presents A Quarreling Pair & Apples And Ladders, two
object-theatre
performances, as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival and Now
That
Communism is Dead My Life Feels Empty, a Richard Foreman premiere,
and
Chamisa 4ºC /Setting, an Australia/Japan dance double-bill,
as part of the
Melbourne International Arts Festival.
Throughout Spring Season 06, the three theatres of The CUB Malthouse
will be
home to the reprisals of various productions some completely
re-invigorated,
some from successful interstate tours and, in our continued practice
of
providing another life to independent Melbourne theatre pieces,
some from
local stages. In the Tower Theatre, we present engrossing solo performances,
Autobiography of Red and The Yellow Wallpaper; productions
that fantastically
and grippingly reinterpret prose text from celebrated American writers.
A spunky new revival of Tom Wrights Babes in the Wood
will rock the
Merlyn in November. And the captivating drama, Translations,
hits the
Malthouse following sell-out shows in Adelaide.
I look forward to seeing you in the foyer soon.
Yours passionately
