FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
As I write, welcome rain beats on the window pane, and the theatres
are abuzz with artists and audiences. It has been thrilling to see
the audiences glowing faces spilling out of The Spook, Exit
the King, Black, and The Pitch, as deep in the rehearsal rooms,
Tense Dave and OT take shape.
In this seasons offerings the beginnings and the endings of
things are vivid. Its a potent elixir; from the absinthe-tinged
songs of the forsaken women conjured up by Paul Capsis, to the bright-eyed
passions of a brother and a sister caught
in childhood dreams imagined by the dynamic company Stuck Pigs Squealing.
Between these two lie darker possibilities and the sumptuousness
of love. Barrie Kosky offers us the gothic brilliance of Edgar Allan
Poe; a woman surrounds herself with cupcakes and music; and a fairytale
princess walks into the deep woods hand in hand with Jean Louis
Perrault. All this and more.
It is especially exciting to be bringing you Stephen Pages
Kin, a heart-tugging tribute to the young boys of his family, and
the first in a series of Indigenous projects made possible through
a new collaboration between Malthouse Theatre and the Poola Foundation
Tom Kantor Fund. Tom is my late brother and had a particular
closeness with Indigenous issues and peoples. He would have loved
this show.
Its also wonderful to know that as we present our work to
you here at Malthouse Theatre, the company is taking its first steps
out into the bigger world, with Honour Bound at both the Vienna
and Holland festivals and Alias Grace touring to Kuala Lumpur.
In this, our second season for 2007, life and death are indelibly
linked. We celebrate; we mourn; we tremble on the edge of our dreams.
Come with us as we hope and love our way through winters sojourn
and into bright blue skies.
