IT’S WHERE YOU’RE FROM. WHERE YOU BELONG.
PASS IT ON
In 2005, David Page floored Malthouse Theatre audiences with Page
8, a soul-stirring portrait of a life less ordinary. Now, his brother
Stephen picks up the story of his family with Kin, a rocking,
hip-hop dance jam, riddled with affecting tales. In this new production,
Stephen hands the torch to the next generation: in their words,
at an age where they are often spoken for but rarely spoken with.
Kin is performed entirely by his young relations, whose slim
shoulders bare a world of joy and struggle, pain and faith. These
kids are deadly: whether break-dancing, singing or just spinning
a yarn, achingly self-conscious or playing the room, they are boys
teetering on the edge of adulthood, still wearing the mantle of
the child while facing their futures as young Aboriginal men.
Anyone who has known the defiant gaze of a teenager will understand:
this mob will prevail.
35 minutes. This performance is not recommended for children under
8 years of age. Strictly limited season.
ISILELI JARDEN (11)
"It has been real deadly to work with Uncle Stephen on the Kin
project. I like to be with Indigenous people and respect my culture."
SEAN PAGE (14)
"I hope we get a full house for the opening."
RYAN JARDEN (12)
"I really like music and play drums, guitar and bass. I also like
to sing opera in the shower."
JOSIAH PAGE (10)
"The best part of Kin is where we use the car. I also like the drumming
and the music."
SAMSON PAGE (13)
"My favourite style of music is hip-hop and rap. My idol is rapper
Ice Cube."
HUNTER PAGE-LOCHARD (13)
"I like to skateboard in my spare time and I am also keen on
art, especially drawing. It has been really good to work with my
dad and my cousins on the Kin project."
CURTIS WALSH-JARDEN (12)
"I have played the electric guitar for five years and it is my
favourite instrument. Working on the Kin project has been
lots of fun. It has been deadly to work with all my cousins."
BABES IN ARMS session
Tuesday October 2, 10.30am
This session has been specifically designed to encourage parents
or carers with small children, who feel they are unable to attend
many theatre performances, to come to this performance of KIN and
enjoy this beautiful production in a relaxed environment.
Children up to the age of two (2) will gain free entry and there
will be a secure area designated for the storage of prams and strollers.
The performance runs for 35mins and contains brief moments of
total auditorium and stage black-outs.

KIN was originally commissioned by the Queensland
Art Gallery
for "The 5th Asia Pacific Triennial
