After storming the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival to win the annual Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, the Harold Angel Award and the Total Theatre Award for Best Emerging Company, 1927 went on to wow the New York critics. Their unique
style of theatrics - where music, film and animation collide with live performance - has been in demand the world over.
Now, in association with the 2008 Adelaide Cabaret Festival and The Studio at Sydney Opera House, Malthouse Theatre is delighted to bring this delicious
Dada-esque treat to Melbourne for a strictly limited season of highly entertaining macabre mischief!
Venture inside the Luggy Hole where the only person left on dry land is a man in a newspaper suit with a small cone. He puts the cone on his head and now…he is King.
Ten vignettes unfurl as the vintage projector creaks into motion, throwing its flickering light upon the blank canvas. A clockwork storyteller, it brings to shuddering life its pantomimes of handmade devils and fanciful maids, cautionary tales for finger-curled flappers and antique fables from the magic lantern.
Children’s stories warp into dark gothic tales, and absurd images take on an uncanny reality. Think David Lynch meets Picnic at Hanging Rock, or Tim Burton directing Louise Brooks!! Charlie Chaplin and Jean Cocteau would themselves draw inspiration from this company.
“A WONDERFULLY SURREAL STEP OUTSIDE EVERYDAY LIFE.”
