ON PASSION
A crush at summer camp. Agatha Christie’s murder mysteries and that little Belgian detective Hercules Poirot endlessly grooming his ridiculous moustache. The brilliant-blue flash of a kingfisher in flight. The lure of other worlds. The magic of snakes. In the last year of her life Dorothy Porter, the Australian poet with ‘the tongue of fire’, wrote down the things that stirred her heart and ignited her senses. The result is an iridescent gem, On Passion (Melbourne University Press). Here it is read aloud by another great female Australian artist, the inestimable Cate Blanchett. Join us in this celebration of a life lived with ferocious joy.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE MERKIN
It’s a long way from Sunshine to the heady heights of London fashion but Leigh Bowery made the journey – with a little help from Elizabeth I and friends. Bowery’s designs, like those of Vivienne Westwood, exult in our enduring fascination with the age of the Virgin Queen. Indeed the Bovver-boy princess and the Dame of all Brixton squats have brought frilled collars, codpieces and that strange proxy of the pubic realm, the merkin, into street parlance again. What is the pull? Robyn Healy, previously Senior Curator of Fashion & Textiles at the National Gallery of Victoria, and now Fashion Program Director in RMIT’s School of Architecture & Design, takes us into the dark corners of the Elizabethan wardrobe and just why Shakespeare’s shoulder pads are here to stay.

WILD THINGS
Julie Andrews didn’t know what the hell she was singing about with all that talk of “raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens”. The true pleasures of life reside in the realm of the imagination, that uncharted place where the wild things are. We invite the Right Hon the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Robert Doyle to take us on a trek through his own dreamings, and the things that inspire him – from a childhood memory, to a favourite film, to the moment in a song when he always finds himself with tears in his eyes. All this and more, perhaps even a poem read aloud, in a session of show and tell from the man with the Keys to the City. This time it’s about the keys to our Lord Mayor’s heart, mind and soul.

All Things on Sunday sessions are in the Merlyn Theatre and commence at 2.30pm sharp. Tickets are $10 for non-subscribers. Duration: one hour.
