KURT WEILL

Ever since an astonished first night audience leapt to their feet in Weimar Berlin, Brecht and Weill’s masterpiece,
The Threepenny Opera has reigned as one of the most outrageous stabs at modern life ever committed to the stage. Straddling the genres of musical comedy, bawdy farce, sophisticated operetta and urgent political satire, it shoves aside the pretentions of modern world civility to revel in all that is corrupt and squirming beneath.

The most notorious anti-hero to storm a stage, Mac is the original city crim who’s never met a law, a woman or a cop he couldn’t break - but when he challenges the supremacy of the Beggar King and his empire of manufactured woes, the fallout threatens to tear the town apart.

Director, Michael Kantor and text adaptor, Raimondo Cortese discover in The Threepenny Opera a world uncannily true to our own – where moralities are gambled by the powerful, and corruption is code for survival among the downtrodden. At its savage, thrillingly contradictory heart, is Kurt Weill’s raw, jazzy and intensely beautiful music, including the chilling classic, Mack the Knife.

In this major collaboration with Victorian Opera, Richard Gill conducts a sizzling ensemble of 19 thieves, whores and tramps drawn from the hot and dangerous firmaments of opera, music theatre, cabaret, and every dive in between, led by Judi Connelli (Gypsy, The Pack of Women), Grant Smith (Sleeping Beauty), Paul Capsis (Boulevard Delirium), Eddie Perfect (Shane Warne: The Musical), Dimity Shepherd (Through the Looking Glass) and Casey Bennetto (Keating!).

The Threepenny Opera is more than a production – it is an event. (Don’t book late!)

“IT'S NOT JUST THE ENDLESS COVER VERSIONS OF MACK THE KNIFE (BY LOUIS ARMSTRONG, FRANK SINATRA OR STING) THAT HAVE KEPT THE WORK ALIVE. THE THREEPENNY OPERA DEFINED A WHOLE NOTION OF PERFORMANCE IN ‘ROUGH STYLE ’, ONE THAT CONTINUES TO INFORM THE WORLD OF ROCK TODAY.”

THE GUARDIAN

“THE 1928 SHOW THAT MADE MUSICALS LIKE CABARET AND CHICAGO POSSIBLE: BERTOLT BRECHT AND KURT WEILL’S THE THREEPENNY OPERA IS THE GRANDADDY OF ALL THE SINGING, STINGING PORTRAITS OF FAT SOCIETIES ON THEIR EVES OF DESTRUCTION.”
