Inspired by the haunting work of Scandinavian painter Odd Nerdrum, and driven by the revolutionary score of Igor Stravinskys The Rite of Spring, Meryl Tankards The Oracle, takes on the conflicting forces of Nature and humanity in a major new work for dance phenomenon Paul White. Last seen in Malthouse Theatres Honour Bound and winner of the 2008 Helpmann Award for Best Male Dancer.
Meditative and sensual, disturbing and wise, here is the oracle, the interpreter of signs we cannot afford to miss. What sacrifice will nature demand to renew a harmony squandered by human greed and indifference?
Choreographer Meryl Tankard has enthralled Australian and international audiences with commissions for Australian Dance Theatre, Lyon Opera Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theatre, and as a pre-eminent dancer for the legendary late Pina Bausch.
In this Malthouse Theatre and Sydney Opera House commission, Tankard reunites with photographer and visual artist Régis Lansac to create an oracle for our times.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australian Council, its arts funding and advisory body, the Keir Foundation and UNSW. Original development assistance through Critical Path's Responsive Program.
