The plays of Eugene Ionesco (and especially Exit the King) constantly remind us that realism falls short of reality, presenting only a shrunken view, failing to account for our fundamental obsessions: love, death and astonishment. The place where the truth will be found is in our dreams, in the imagination.
This wonderful advice, that we must close our eyes to see the truth, is Ionescos invitation to the theatre. What could be more suggestive than the brilliant, blood-red curtain which lines our closed eyes and through which we must pass?
Ionescos unrivalled inspiration was Samuel Beckett, and among Becketts great movers of the soul are his creations Winnie (Julie Forsyth) and Willie (Peter Carroll) in Happy Days, my production which lifts the red curtain on Season Two. To follow, an Australian Gothic tale, told through the songs of Paul Kelly, about loves shocking price; and then a startling physical and visual performance based on the tensile vocabulary of bridge building.
Through the season you will experience living dreams inspired by the weird and exhilarating forms of Butoh, the thumping velocities of Stravinsky, and the imaginations passion for language which can strike the soul of washerwomen, a desperate village wife or a despised miller alike.
As always, we hope to bring a love for all the elements of theatre to the fore as a prompt and provocation to your senses, your mind and your heart. Close your eyes, pass through the red curtain, and see for yourself!
