Malthouse Theatre

PROPOSALS - ABOUT US

ABOUT US

Malthouse Theatre is a company dedicated to contemporary Australian theatre in all its guises. Our programming is an investigation into what such theatre can be and the questions it raises about the world we live in. We think of this as the contest of imagination between artists and audiences. For more Information, visit Past Seasons and Our Company on this website.

Since its inception in 2005, Malthouse Theatre has sought out collaborations with independent artists as well as new and established companies — locally, nationally and internationally. Most often, we commission and produce new work, but we also present touring productions and local works that are already financially sustainable, and occasionally we invite artists to revisit their work, providing a context and support for re-presentation.

With the limited resources available to engage with unsolicited proposals, we particularly welcome those which have some degree of producing and/or financial support attached - or the potential for such support. This might be way of development and/or programming grants, partnering organisations, funded professional development initiatives or the like.

At the very least, we welcome proposals from individuals and artistic teams with a demonstrable track record for bold and dynamic theatre-making which can, conceivably, sustain a minimum two-week season in one of our three presentation spaces. We consider all such proposals in the context of our endeavour to provide a rich and varied program and the need to sustain the life of the company.

While all Malthouse Theatre productions are risk-taking, the capacity for creative success and production viability is often shaped by the choice of venue.

ABOUT YOU

Malthouse Theatre is a fully professional organisation and - outside of its Education Program - works exclusively with professional artists. To this end, we seek proposals from artists or artistic teams with a demonstrable record of professional experience. This means that you (or your work) has been engaged professionally in at least two productions and you are identified by the Industry as a professional artist. Readings and educational activities do not constitute a professional production.

ABOUT THE ARTISTIC TEAM

Proposals will be viewed by some or all members of the Malthouse Theatre artistic team. The team is made up of: Artistic Director, Executive Producer, Associate Producer & Business Manager, Dramaturge in Residence, Assistant to the Dramaturge, Artists In Residence and Company Manager. On occasion we call for a further opinion from a colleague or fellow company.
