Truthmachine unfolds into intimate exploration of the notions of truth and deceit, the collapse in language and the little white lie. Fusing movement, word, and imagery the show draws humour, absurdity and beauty from the mundane rituals of daily life. Influenced by the innovations of DV8 Physical Theatre and the comic wit of Larry David, the work will be built around a set performance structure with room for improvisation. TRUTHMACHINE seeks to not only entertain but to also provoke thought regarding people’s own personal experiences in contending with the truth.

CANNED THOUGHT
Lenka Hughes, Sean Figgers, Kristina Verhangen, Roisin Chiller, Mystery Box actor/s

DIRECTOR:
Tanya-Sue Uscinas
Dance choreography: Lenka Hughes
PLAYWRIGHT/DEVISOR: Tanya-Sue Uscinas

A physical theatre piece exploring what may be said when no words are spoken in our public and private life. This is an exploration of one girl (dancer) and her thoughts on life and all things trivial when she is alone in the privacy of her toilet. She is mute, by choice, and can only argue and act out her fantasies in these moments by herself (with actors’ aid). These moments are divided into grids on the stage where a moveable stage, a wooden frame, is placed in or across these grids. What happens when two grids are crossed and her sexual fantasies meets the most recent argument with her mother? Or when chance is used to create the sequence of events? Everything becomes public for this private girl and her actions may speak louder than any word she might think.

SEND IN THE CLOWNS
PERFORMERS Sean Mulcahy, Amelia Ducker, Emily Byrne
DIRECTOR/S & DEVISORS: Emily Byrne, Sean Mulcahy, Amelia Ducker

In SEND IN THE CLOWNS we see a snapshot of a disturbed man whose mind and psyche blend the lines between an adult and pre-pubescent. We see someone trapped in their own chaos where reality and fantasy merge to create a surreal world filled with the innocence of youth and the vices that consume adults. However, this man’s innocent nature is brought into disrepute as we begin to question ‘truth’ as he sees it. Is he ingenuous or is this a scenario the man has dreamt up in order to rationalize his ‘true’ crimes. Is this man a saviour or a sadist?

PLAYBREAK
PERFORMERS: Rachel Torrance, Sophia Constantine, Tegan Larin, Sean Scanlon
DIRECTOR/S & DEVISORS: Rachel Torrance, Sophia Constantine, Tegan Larin, Sean Scanlon

A common man is thrust into an unfamiliar land where his enjoyment of a crisp green apple and throw away attitude could lead to a town’s starvation come winter; when a peculiar bird puts forth a riddle that sets him off on a journey to redeem himself and set things right. Told through the familiar structure of folklore narrative, this group-devised physical theatre piece evolved from sharing our ancestral stories of struggle which left us questioning our own modern trials and tribulations. Could they compare with our families experiences of starvation, war and immigration? Can our relationship with the land be restored to what it once was? Calling on the films of Guillermo Del Toro and Junkyard Theatre for aesthetic inspiration, and in Epic Theatre tradition the main role will be rotated throughout to highlight the performers as simply a vessel for the story.

3DFest New Theatre Festival is a week-long festival created by Malthouse Theatre and Victoria University as an opportunity to create and present NEW works of theatre.

Congratulations to everyone who entered in 2009.

For the first time in 2009 the festival welcomed entries from University students, TAFE students, Youth Theatre Groups and other interested people across Victoria to develop and present original live performances.

Malthouse Theatre and Victoria University are committed to the development of new and original works by emerging artists – writers, performers, directors and producers – and promoting new voices.

3DFest gives successful entrants the opportunity to perform to a panel of industry specialists in a professional environment.

We’re giving you the stage and we want your voice…
- If you’re a writer, performer, director or producer, this is an opportunity to showcase your talents.
- You will have an opportunity to mix with other emerging theatre makers from around Victoria.
- You will be exposed to industry professionals.
- You have the opportunity to perform in a professional theatre.
- You have the opportunity to be included in an emerging artists’ development program offered by the Malthouse Theatre Education Program.

THE SHOWCASE
Selected productions chosen by the Industry Panel will be invited to perform at The CUB Malthouse for the Final Showcase evening.

The criteria for Showcase selection will be based on the aforementioned categories BUT the panel will also look at selecting a range of works that provide a representation of the diversity of Festival Week.

All participants will be invited to attend, acknowledge and celebrate their part in the Festival.

Works are selected from the Showcase to win Development Awards. Development Awards are tailored to the winning groups’ requirements and may take the form of mentoring or collaboration working with a chosen practitioner, workshopping, dramaturgy, mentoring, performance and ‘space grants’ to access studio/theatre. Students from Victoria University, NMIT, Swinburne, National Theatre, Ballarat University, Deakin University, Melbourne University and Monash University have received creative development awards over the past seven years through 3DFest.
