TWO PRACTITIONERS AT THE FOREFRONT OF NEW
INTERNATIONAL THEATRE

Ever since Benedict Andrews directed Fireface by Marius von Mayenburg
(Resident Dramaturge and Playwright at Berlin’s hippest and most dangerous
theatre, the Schaubuhne), for the Sydney Theatre Company and The Sydney
Festival in 2001 he and von Mayenburg have collaborated annually in
developing new works for the Schaubuhne. Malthouse Theatre brings them
together for the first time since then in the Australian premiere of von
Mayenburg's new play, Eldorado.

Set in an unnamed city, Eldorado is redolent of a classic comedy-of-manners
turned inside out with an anatomist’s precision, a coroner’s efficiency and an
undertaker’s humour.

In this baroque dystopian vision, the private and public spheres are inseparable:
an economy of consumption and production has infiltrated every corner of the
domestic realm and colonises the inner lives of its subjects. The gradual
disintegration of the play’s characters is the inexorable crumbling of a shattered
vision; the revelation that the mythical city of gold is a legend founded on the
blood of millions.

Von Mayenburg and Andrews are at the forefront of a new international
theatre and are joined in this production by Anna Tregloan and Paul Jackson
(design team for The Odyssey, Journal of the Plague Year and Ham Funeral)
and a stellar cast including Gillian Jones, Robert Menzies, Bojana
Novakovic, Greg Stone and Alison Whyte.

Benedict Andrew (Helpman Award Winner for Direction in 2002) was
recently awarded the Myer Individual Prize.
