Japan’s Kota Yamazaki and Australia’s Lucy Guerin are both contemporary
dance choreographers whose work is increasingly recognised on the world
stage. Both have their own companies in their respective homelands and
subscribe to their own distinct aesthetic. The different training and background
of these two leading dance figures will be apparent in this exciting dance
exchange double bill.

In July 2005 Guerin travelled to Kyoto, Japan for a one-week workshop/auditio
to select dancers she wanted to work with. At the same time Yamazaki came to
Melbourne for a similar process. As a further element to this exchange, Guerin’s
choreography has been set to a score by Japanese composer Haco, whilst
Yamazaki has worked with Australian designer Ben Cobham to create his new
work. Following its world premiere in Kyoto in August, Chamisa 4C / Setting
has its Australian premiere on Wednesday 25 October at the Beckett Theatre,
the CUB Malthouse.

Lucy Guerin’s Setting is a dance work that accumulates around two people.
Their personal histories, interactions, first impressions, communications,
possessions, desires and details of daily life resolve into a concrete visual
diagram of what they have in common and what sets them apart. It addresses
the challenges of translation, not only through language, but also through the
interpretation of ideas between the maker, the performer and the viewer of the
work.

Kota Yamazaki’s Chamisa 4C has been inspired by the idea of finding life in
the desert. This floating, fluid dance work endeavours to express through the
body the beauty, sadness and strength of the human spirit. This dance double
bill offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience a true cultural and
choreographic exchange and to appreciate and celebrate the similarities and
differences in the work of these artists.

As one of the most prolific choreographers in the Australian contemporary
dance scene, Guerin has been commissioned by both local and international
companies including Dance Works Rotterdam and Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White
Oak Dance Project, and her works have toured extensively throughout Europe
and the USA. Guerin also brings to the Melbourne International Arts Festival the
world premiere of her latest work, Structure and Sadness.

Originally from Nigiita, Japan, Kota Yamazaki graduated from Bunaka Fashion
Institute in Tokyo. He studied Butoh under Akira Kasai and danced for his
teacher’s company Tenshi-Kan. He was later invited to join Daniel Larrieu at
Centre National de Danse Contemporaine in Angers, France and received an
award at the 1994 Platform of Bagnolet competition. He formed his own
company in 1996 Rosy Co. and Kota Yamazaki / Fluid hug-hug in 2001 based
on the tenets of "travelling, exchanging, exploring". Since that time he has
toured extensively and his work has been presented by festivals around the
world. Kota Yamazaki / Fluid hug-hug will also be performing Rise: Rose at this
year’s Melbourne International Arts Festival.

This double bill has been brought together as part of the Australia Japan Dance
Exchange (AJDX), comprising ten separate events that will be performed in both
Australia and Japan. The AJDX is co-ordinated by Hirano Productions (Australia
and Japan Contemporary Dance Network (JCDN), who have also co-produced this performance.
