Are there many little boys who think they are a Monster?
But in my case I am right.
I will never know how you see red and you will never know how I
see It.
In an autobiography begun as a five-year-old, a young boy who is
also a
winged red monster bares the volcanic terrain of his inner and outer
worlds.
Accompany Luke Mullins, one of our most interesting and dynamic
young theatre
makers, on a theatrical journey of discovery as Geryon, a winged
red monster,
who travels a heroic journey into the reality of a world where he
doesnt belong,
in the world premiere of Autobiography of Red.
In the hands of an abusive brother and an affectionate but ineffectual
mother,
Geryon finds solace behind the lens of his camera as a photographer,
and in
the arms of a cavalier drifter who abandons Geryon at the peak of
his
infatuation. Confronting the pain of desire and a destructive love
affair, while
delving into the mythic underlying our everyday, Autobiography of
Red is an
exploration and expression of an epic but familiar character, coming
to terms
with existing in the reality of a contemporary world.
Based on the Greek myth of Herakles in a verse novel of a profound
love story
by Anne Carson, one of North Americas most celebrated writers,
Luke Mullins
is joined by some of Melbournes most exciting young artists
Anna Cordingley
(Conversations in a Brothel, Wounds to The Face), Adam Gardnir (A
View of
Concrete), Nick Verso (Henrietta's Last Safari), Richard Vabre (Lally
Katz and
the Terrible Mysteries of the Volcano), Jethro Woodward (The Black
Swan of
Trespass, Black Medea), and Leisa Shelton (The Inhabited Woman,
Journal of
the Plague Year).Together they explore the rich landscape of this
exquisite
chronicle through sound, vision and physical language.
Luke Mullins is an actor and theatre-maker who creates work which
is visually
and physically dynamic. As a collaborator with Stuck Pigs Squealing
he has
performed in 4xBeckett, Agoraphobe, The Eisteddfod (Green Room Award
Nomination) and Lally Katz and the Terrible Mysteries of the Volcano.
He has
also worked with Uncle Semolina and Friends and the Melbourne Theatre
Company amongst other companies and productions. In July 2006 Luke
will go
to New York to create a new work with Stuck Pigs and a group of
New York
based artists.
Of Autobiography of Red:
"A profound love story
sensuous and funny, poignant, musical
and tender."
