
Malthouse Theatres art-form innovation and consistent excellence in production have been recognised in the 29 nominations it has received for the 2009 Green Room Awards.
The nominations for the Malthouse Theatre announced today by the Green Room Awards Association range across four different panel areas: Theatre - Companies, Alternative/Hybrid Performance, Dance and New Writing. The nominations span all aspects of production, including direction, performance, set, lighting and costume design, composition/sound design, projection/video design, dance ensemble and creative collaboration.
Malthouse Theatres commission of Goodbye Vaudeville Charlie Mudd attracted 8 nominations, including recognition of playwright Lally Katz for New Writing for Australian Stage. Chris Kohn and Arena Theatre Company return to the Malthouse Theatre with the co-commission of Declan Greens new work Moth in the Tower Theatre (13 -30 May).
Knives in Hens, produced in collaboration with State Theatre Company of South Australia, received 6 nominations. This includes Male Performer for Robert Menzies, who stars in Furious Mattress, now playing in the Beckett Theatre..
After a successful transfer season of Happy Days at Sydneys Belvoir St Theatre, Female Performer nominee Julie Forsyth (pictured above) returns to the Malthouse stage this year as the not-so-virgin Queen in Elizabeth: Almost by Chance a Woman (April 3-24).
Malthouse Theatre is strongly represented in the Dance and Alternative/Hybrid Performance categories. Meryl Tankards mesmerising work The Oracle (with Paul White, nominated for Male Dancer) has subsequently been invited to perform at several European festivals. Chunky Moves extraordinary Mortal Engine completely sold out before the 2009 Malthouse Theatre season opened, and will now present a return season (March 3-13) for the home town audiences that didnt get to see the work the first time round and for those who know that once is not enough.
The award recipients will be announced in a ceremony on Monday 15 March 2010 at The Playhouse, Arts Centre Melbourne.
