An opportunity for Australia’s independent artists and ensembles to present new works in The Malthouse’s Tower Theatre from July-October 2012.

So you may have heard that we’re trying something new? We’re dedicating the Tower Theatre to an independent artists’ season next year.

Helium is your opportunity to be one of up to five new works presented as part of a season dedicated to Australia’s contemporary performing artists.

Why are we doing it? Malthouse Theatre offers the Helium season as part of our dedication to providing a range of platforms for new work (not just our own). It’s the first time we’ve done this as a structured season and it is recognition of the profound influence of Australia’s independent scene on Malthouse Theatre’s own evolution. While Helium provides a pathway for artists and ensembles to present their own work in an established and supportive contemporary performance venue, it also begins a relationship between these creative teams and the Malthouse Theatre.

For Helium 2012 Malthouse Theatre received 80 expressions of interest for works involving over 414 artists from around Australia.

After much deliberation  we have our 5 works… but you’ll have to stay tuned for the Helium season launch in May to find out more.
