Preparing students for the Theatre Experience
As you know, Theatre is not Cinema. Theatre means there are live
actors on stage and it is very much dependent on a good actor-audience
relationship. Many of your students may never have been to the theatre
and therefore, we would ask that you assist with the following:
Create a context for the performance by either accessing
the script, Education Resources, having students conduct research,
or by discussing the play and its style and content in class
Prepare your students for a live show by discussing the nature
of theatre and the importance of their role in the actor-audience
relationship
Alert students to the fact that the actors can see and hear
the audience from the stage.
Discuss with your students the importance of needing to be
aware of others and the need to respectful of live performance.
In particular we ask that teachers assist with and ensure that students
are aware of and adhere to the following:
Mobile phones must be switched
off completely while in the theatre
Food or drink is not permitted in the theatre
Portable CD players, MP3s and I-Pods are not permitted in
the theatre
Large school bags and backpacks need to be left in the Malthouse
Cloakroom
We also ask that teachers please sit amongst their students in
order to assist with supervision.
