Simon Westcott, Chair
Simon joined Lonely Planet in February 2001 in the role of Global Publisher and joined the Board of Directors in December 2002. From June 2006 to February 2007 Simon also acted as Online Publisher.
Simon has held a number of positions in the book publishing and newspaper industries. Most recently he held the position of Circulation Sales & Marketing Director at The Age. Prior to his two and a half year stint at the Age he was with the Trade Division of Reed Books in the UK for four years in various creative writing and marketing management roles. He also served as the researcher for Margaret Drabble, the UK based biographer and novelist for several years, and as the Deputy Managing Director of Bookwatch, UK.
Simon has an MA in American Literature from Indiana University, a BA in English Literature from Oxford, and a Diploma of Music from the Royal Academy of Music in London. He also put in two years toward a PhD in English and American Literature before deciding publishing had more appeal than academia.
Simon's speaks three languages and reads four. He is active in several community organizations.
Frankie Airey, Member
Frankie has 20 years experience of planning
and managing development programs across the non-profit sector.
She began her career with Oxford Universityâs ground-breaking £340m
campaign, where she led the Individual Giving section. During the
1990s she moved between the UK and Australia and developed in-depth
knowledge of the philanthropic sector and a track record of achievement
in senior positions and consultancy in both countries. She also
served on the board of Sadlerâs Wells Theatre in London. In Australia,
Frankie was Director of Development at the Victorian Arts Centre
in Melbourne, and as
a consultant has worked with many of the leading performing arts
companies across the country.
She founded Philanthropy Squared in 2003 to apply the experience and
ideas behind the many successful development operations with which
she and her associates have been involved.
Ian McRae
Ian McRae is currently Chairman of the Australian Ballet School and a Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre, Melbourne Recital Centre and Malthouse Theatre. He is a member of the Australian International Cultural Council and Deputy Chair of the Australian National Commission of UNESCO.
He has just completed a five and a half year term as a member of the Australia Council, where he was Chair of its Theatre Board and a member of its Audit and Finance Committee. He has also just retired from the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board.
In 2007 he teamed with Leo Schofield to bring the renowned Paris Opera Ballet to Sydney for its first visit to Australia.
Ian was General Manager of The Australian Ballet from 1991 to 2002; a national flagship company which performs throughout Australia and internationally.
He joined the Ballet in May 1986 after five years as Administration Manager of the Victorian Arts Centre. His time at the Arts Centre in Melbourne covered the exciting period of establishing the organization and its operating philosophies - and the opening of the theatres and concert hall.
A Chartered Accountant, he spent twelve years in that profession before accepting the role of Administration Manager with the Australian Conservation Foundation. He later moved into private enterprise where he held senior financial and management positions.
Ian has been extensively involved in voluntary work throughout his career - including four years as President of the National Youth Council of Australia and Treasurer of the Asian Youth Council - and seven months in Rome as consultant at the invitation of the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
He was a member of the Council of the Victorian College for the Arts from 1993 to 2006 and its President from 2004-2006. He has been a member of the Board of the Heide Museum of Modern Art (1989–1998) and the Council of the Australian Ballet School (1990–1996) and was Vice President of the Australian Entertainment Industry Association. He has also been a Board member of Bell Shakespeare Company and Orchestra Victoria and a member of the Victorian Council for the Arts.
In 2002 he was honoured as Cultural Leader of the Year by the Australian Business Arts Foundation.
John Gibbins, Member
John is currently a partner with Deloitte
in the Enterprise Risk Services Group, focussing on new business
development and growth strategies. John has 27years experience as
a partner specialising in external and internal audit.
John is also currently responsible for outsourced internal audit
functions.
This has included risk reviews together with control optimisation
and process re-engineering.
Prof. John McCallum, Member
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Educational Programs) and Director
TAFE at the
Victoria University; Economics and Psychology degrees and University
Medal
from the University of Queensland; Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral
studies at
Nuffield College, Oxford University UK. He has a distinguished academic
and
community career in Australia and is an international leader in
ageing research
including as a Director of the Dubbo Longitudinal Study for 15 years.
In 2003 he
was awarded a Federation Medal for outstanding service as
a researcher to
ageing and aged care issues.
Roger Donazzan, Member
A lawyer for 28 years who specialised in corporate, commercial,
international,
property law and strategic business advice. Roger is a former Chairman
of
Herbert Geer & Rundle Lawyers and also a former partner with
Minter Ellison
Lawyers. Since 2005 he has been the Executive Chairman of Harmony
Resorts
Niseko Pty Ltd. a Japanese focused resort owner and developer.
Sigrid Thornton, Member
One of Australia's leading and best loved actresses, Sigrid Thornton has starred in many of the films which are now regarded as classics of the Australian cinema, including, George Miller's box office hit, The Man From Snowy River, (Fox Classics), The Lighthorsemen, (RKO), directed by Simon Wincer, Slate Wyn And Me, (Hemdale) and The Man From Snowy River II, (Disney – Touchstone) In addition, she has starred in several very successful television productions including Sea Change, for Granada / Artist Services, The Boy In The Bush for Channel Four / ABC, co-starring Kenneth Brannagh and The Far Country co-starring Michael York and 1915 for BBC / 7 Network.
Susan Heron, Member
Currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Institute
of Management
(Victoria/Tasmania), Susan Heron is a dynamic professional with extensive
management experience and corporate leadership across diverse industry
sectors, including medical, shipping, finance and higher education.
Susan is also current Board member of Museum Victoria and previously
served on the boards of NM Rothschild & Sons (Australia) Limited
and
Southern Health Care Network and Water EcoScience Limited. She was
also
Deputy Chairman of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) for six years
and was a
member of the Victorian Governments Finance Industry Consultative
Committee.
